Sreevatsa Organic Farm Products
“About 80% certified Organic products are exported. We have opened this shop to bring Certified Organic farm products to the Indian market, at affordable prices, so that Coimbatoreans can develop a healthy habit of eating wholesome and tasty food, grown the organic way.” - Mrs. Shantha Ramaswamy, Sreevatsa Organic Farm Products
What are Organic farm products?
Organic farming is growing food products naturally, the way it is intended to grow. The main focus here is to produce food products without the usage of synthetic and harmful agro-chemicals at any point of time. This way the food produced is healthy and soil develops and retains its nutritive value. This leads to environmental sustainability, an issue that is otherwise seeking urgent attention in the present world.
The Sreevatsa Farm
Located in the foothills of the Western Ghats, the farm was converted into an Organic farm during an extreme drought in 2000. Until then, chemicals were used extensively and the plants and soil could not continue in the harsh weather conditions. “Panchagavya” – a mixture used in the temples, was suggested by a trained person at Kanchi Kamakoti Trust at Kanchipuram under Swami Jayendra Saraswati. From then, today Sreevatsa Organic Farm is lush fully green and has taken all the challenges posed by nature so far with the guidance of Organic Farming methods. The Farm is also certified Organic by INDOCERT.
About Sreevatsa Organic Farm Products Shop
Located in 7/1A, Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore, next to the Sreevatsa Real Estate head office, this shop was inaugurated in September 2004. All the food products from the company-owned organic farm are sold here. The shop was basically opened to bring awareness on Organic Farming Methods to the Indian public as these are only exported to foreign countries without the benefit to the nation.

Today all Organic provisions, fruits and vegetables, cosmetics, honey and herbal products are available procured from several certified Organic-farming communities in India. The shop supports the Organic farmers to get a fair price for their produce.

“This is a Service-oriented shop. We also call it ‘the farmer’s shop’. We have fixed the costs of various food products with the farmers and with our customers as well. This makes it much affordable for one and all.” - Mrs. Shantha Ramaswamy, Sreevatsa Organic farm products
Common Myth - Organic Farm Products are not affordable
This is a common myth among the public regarding Organic Products.

If the nutritive value of the Organic Products is taken into consideration, then the prices marked are definitely worth paying. Comparing Organic Products to Chemically grown farm products, the Organic Products are healthier and more nutritive. Several diabetic, Hypertension (high BP), cardiac, skin, cancer and gastric patients are our clients who have shown good improvement in health by consuming Organic food. We believe that “Prevention is better than cure”.
Advantages of using Organic food products
There are many advantages of consuming organic products, a few of which are mentioned below
  • Organic food is very tasty and stays fresh longer without any refrigeration.
  • Organic food grows in harmony with the nature, the way vegetation is intended to grow. This makes it more pure and safe to consume. Researches and studies have revealed that organic food has medicinal properties attached to it, when consumed on a daily basis. Thus, nature takes care of you, reducing your frequent visits to the doctor.
  • The food products grow with the natural vitamins and minerals intact in it. This way, cooking needs less of salt, thus eliminating chances of aggravating Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  • Some fruits and vegetables grown the organic way do not look attractive but they are definitely rich in nutrients. For example, apples are sold after coating them with wax, which is synthetic. This makes it look very attractive and gives them sheen, but it is poisonous to consume these apples. This is definitely not the case with organically grown food.
  • Any grain or pulses that is purchased from our shop would definitely sprout, unlike the inorganically processed grains that do not sprout at all
“Experience the difference. Organic food products have a special and distinct taste that our customers CANNOT experience in any other normally grown food. Check it out for yourself. For example, buy dry grapes from our shop and put in water, they would get back to the normal grape size.” – Mrs. Shantha Ramaswamy, CEO, Sreevatsa Organic Farm Products
How can a farm be maintained without using chemicals?
This is a question that would hit upon anyone when they hear about organic farming and some even come to a conclusion that it is all a gimmick.

In our organic farm, we do not use harmful chemicals and synthetic manures or pesticides.
  • We use Vermicompost as fertilizer and Panchagavya as the pesticide for all the vegetation.
  • Earthworms naturally grow in our farms, as the water used for irrigation is not chlorinated. This paves way for Vermicompost, thus enriching, fertilizing and conditioning the soil, the natural way.
  • Panchagavya is a very divine and sacred mixture that helps as a natural pesticide. This is prepared from the milk that is obtained after the Sacred Bathing (Abhishekham) of Gods, from temples. Panchagavya makes the external skin of the food products harder, by conserving the pectin content in the food, so that no pests or viruses can infect them.
  • We rear cows in our farm that helps in getting the cow’s urine, which is a rich source of urea.
  • We also practice Biodynamic-farming methodologies for effective germination and growth of plants with respect to the movement of the moon and Saturn. The Tamil calendar shows these days as “Melnoku naal” (ascending) and “Keezhnokku naal” (descending) that has been followed in Indian farming for ages.
  • The real estate wing of Sreevatsa, helps with many construction wastes like wood, saw dust, soil etc. This is also used in the preparation of compost and manure.
We grow these organic manures, pesticides and fertilizers free from harmful chemicals in our own farm. Our farm is certified Organic by the INDOCERT certification, which is a certificate given for processing of organic agricultural products.

“Through biodynamic farming we raised 13 tons of cashews in the year 2007-2008, using Cow Path Pith (CPP BD 501) and other organic manures and pesticides, even though the weather conditions were very unfavorable.” – Shantha Ramaswamy
Why are Organic Farm products expensive when compared to inorganic products?
This is a question that would hit upon anyone when they hear about organic farming and some even come to a conclusion that it is all a gimmick.

In our organic farm, we do not use harmful chemicals and synthetic manures or pesticides.
  • Inorganic farming utilizes Ammonium Sulphate (Urea), Super Phosphate, Potash, Chemical Mineral Mixture and Pesticides like Monochrotophos (Endosulphon, Rogor and Nuvagron), which are harmful to the environment and human consumption in the long run. These chemicals are commonly used in farming and are available in the market easily.
  • The Organic Manures and Herbal Extracts are prepared using labour manually which is more intensive and adds to the cost of the Organic Products.
  • There is a lack of awareness among farmers and public regarding the ill effects of use of chemicals in agriculture. Further the government is providing heavy subsidy towards the use of urea and other chemicals and there is only lip service towards Organic farming. Hence there are more farmers who are still not confident towards Organic farming, as the support structure does not exist today.
  • The Organic farming community is very small but more farmers are getting convinced on the benefits of Organic farming. But today this small community is spread wider and hence involves a lot of logistics to make these products available to the public.
  • Owing to the popularity of Chemical farming, the Organic farmer has to certify the farm to establish the method of farming. The time to convert a chemical farm to Organic farm takes minimum three years to remove the harmful effects of these chemicals used.
When more people are aware of this Organic Farming there would be a better demand, which would bring down the prices as these products would available easily.

With a noble cause to provide good quality along with nutrient and fiber-rich food in India, Sreevatsa Organic Farm continues to exist. Personally understanding the importance of going the organic way, we urge others to switch to organic production and consumption of food, for a greener and healthier tomorrow.
